Pintor y grabador alemán. Fue el artista más relevante de la escuela del Danubio. La mayor parte de su obra pictórica representa temas religiosos, pero fue uno de los primeros artistas en desarrollar el paisajismo como género independiente, especializándose en la luz del atardecer y en ruinas a la hora del crepúsculo. Sus dibujos demuestran estas destrezas en negro con toques de luz blanca sobre papel oscuro. La influencia de Alberto Durero es evidente en sus grabados en miniatura y en sus xilografías. Desde 1526 hasta su muerte se desempeñó como arquitecto en Ratisbona. No existen obras arquitectónicas de su autoría que hayan perdurado.
